Water Pavilion Floriade 2011

In 2012 Venlo organizes the Floriade. As part of our water theme we offered them to design their water pavilion. The basin in which the pavilion was planned was closed of by a walkable dike. We decided to place the pavilion in the dike instead of in the basin. This multifunctional floating dike pavilon connects two sides of the exhibition and is assembled out of multiple segments fitting transportation constraints. Reuse and flexibility are core aspects of this floating pavilion.

The conceptual and spatial organization is inspired on the dynamics of water. Water provides an excellent condition in operating this energy neutral and highly flexible pavilion. Water in all its acpects will be made into an experience by visiting the pavilion. Each segment of the pavilion contains a specific programm, is self supportive and functions independently. The roofs of the connected segments create a floating landscape. Reconfiguring these segments alter the roof landscape as well as the internal organization.

The auditorium can be moved outside to provide excellent views on the open water while opening up a patio at the restaurant side. A singular action results in multiple effects and enriches the experience of the waterpavilion. Besides the visible omnipresence of water, the pavilion explains the essence of water for it’s operation and will function as a well balanced ecosystem. Rain water usage for flushing toilets, the roof package and helofyt filters for cleaning the kitchen water and providing climatic cooling.
Floating gardens in the lake in front of the pavilion provide the restaurant with fresh ingredients while showcasing visitors the dynamics of water. Basins with floating trees provide shade for the pavilion, their position can be adapted according to the shade needed.
