Wilhelminaplein Amsterdam
As a rule we do not like acoustic ceilings. When we removed the metal plates of a suspended ceiling for an office refurbishment in Amsterdam, we stumbled upon pitch black acoustic flakes that fully covered the ceiling, part of the wall and the concrete beams. Since our limited budget didn't allow us to scrape them of, we made the black background an integral part of our design. The newly inserted white volume that contains entrance, boardroom and kitchen is aligned with the boundary of the flaked ceiling. The contrasting white volume in a black setting creates an effect that makes the space appear roofless. Since each room within the white volume tapers to the back it is possible to place wardrobe and cupboard space inside the walls. Seen from the main office space the tapering walls dramatize the perspective of the rooms in which regular office activities look like a staged performance.
