JFK Smartlofts

The transformation of the former Amsterdam District Office into a contemporary residential building starts with the existing concrete skeleton. The building is completely dismantled and the skeleton is extended to a supplementary third floor.

The building has an open structure: the residents themselves have a major impact on the size and layout of their apartment. Each buyer is completely free to define and change their floor plan. The apartments, called Smartlofts, differ from normal apartments because of their efficient layout with minimised circulation space and no separation of functions. In total the building contains 36 different Smartlofts.

The atrium continues to be the bright core of the building and is modified according to its new use. The new facade elements give the building an open character; in addition it provides the apartments with extra daylight and gives access to the new balconies. The façade's materialisation is stone-like, just like the existing building, a combination of stucco and masonry. On the ground floor and roof terrace a large space is reserved for communal use.
