Spilgames approached space&matter to transform a former pharmaceutical factory in Hilversum into a vibrant, stimulating place for collaboration, learning, and experimentation. All spaces within the proposed design encourage up-close and personal interaction, with the aim to create a 2.200m2 Internet campus for the Spilgames employees.
The total program of the campus is organized around three areas: the former warehouse becomes an area for meetings and is filled with temporary structures; a new extension adds the necessary amount of square meters for workspaces; the former director office is transformed into a bar plus restaurant for the employees.
Due to very tight budgetary concerns, space&matter decided to introduce a strong model split: the existing industrial warehouse, around 800 m2, gets a minimal renovation with 30 percent of the budget and will be filled with several temporal structures based on the criteria of adaptability that would make it easy to reconfigure over time. These temporal structures can be used as meeting rooms, are movable and can be positioned all over the campus. The other 70 percent of the budget is invested in a new extension, which follows the architectural and structural form of the former warehouse. This division allows more architectural possibilities, seeking a balance between standardization and adaptability.
