State of Fashion

In early 2018, State of Fashion commissioned Space&Matter to create an overall exhibition design within the existing structure of the Melkfabriek in Arnhem. The event needed to reflect the State of Fashion’s aims, combining hardcore activism with new forms of glamour, while critically reflecting on current societal values. The seven-week event hosted 50 exhibitors divided into five main themes.

The exhibition represents a diverse scope of work in terms of discipline and medium. A variety of material is featured in each theme, from objects and garments to scientific research, video and photography. By creating five dramatically different environments, each ‘room’ has its own identity and atmosphere. The roughness of the abandoned milk factory provides the perfect environment to contrast with these extravagant new concepts.

Circularity and re-use
In accordance with the ‘State of Fashion’ manifesto, circularity and re-use are key to the design process and construction of the exhibition. It was therefore important that the materials have a definitive destination following the exhibition’s conclusion.
