In collaboration with a building group of fourteen households, space&matter is transforming a 4.200 sqm school building into twenty five Smartloft apartments. The former fashion school contains two separate building parts dating from 1914 and 1969.
The buildings will receive a complete sustainable make over. All windows will be replaced, all walls will be insulated and a solar powered heating and cooling system will be installed. The 1914 part is extended with a rooftop addition that will host two penthouses.
In total the building contains 25 units with ceiling heights of 4,5 meters. This allows residents to build additional mezzanines and to be fully creative with their apartment lay-out. Apartment sizes start from 44 sqm and go up to 218 sqm for the largest penthouse. The variety of apartments ensures a mixed residential community.
A Smartlofts community building comes with additional shared features. Residents share a large collective lounge on the ground floor, a guest-room, a roof terrace and a large courtyard.
From day one future residents were involved in the design. Besides designing their own apartment layout with their own architect, they were also in charge of designing the collective space.
