In collaboration with a building group of fourteen households, Space&Matter transformed a 4.200 sqm school building into twenty-five Smartloft apartments.
Formerly a fashion school, the building contains two separate parts, dating from 1914 and 1969. Each received a complete sustainable makeover: replacing all the windows, insulating all the walls and installing a solar-powered heating and cooling system. The design also extends the 1914 part with a rooftop addition that hosts two penthouses.
In total, the building contains 25 units with ceiling heights of 4.5 meters. This allows residents to build additional mezzanines and to be fully creative with their apartment layout. Apartment sizes start from 44 sqm and go up to 218 sqm for the largest penthouse. The variety of apartments ensures a mixed residential community.
A Smartlofts community building comes with additional shared features. Residents share a large collective lounge on the ground floor, a guest-room, a roof terrace and a large courtyard.
Future residents were involved in the design from day one. Besides designing their apartment layouts with their own architect, they also were in charge of designing the collective space.
