Space&Matter’s design for Bataafse Kamp carefully preserves the historic character of the former school building while transforming it into a modern residential complex. Key architectural elements such as the grand stairwells, post-war facades, and main building volumes are retained, with new additions like a central entrance, balconies, terraces, and a lifted roof to accommodate penthouses. These sensitive yet bold interventions respect the building’s heritage while adapting it to contemporary living. The north side gains a clear entryway, and each residence is enhanced with private outdoor space—be it a garden, balcony, or roof terrace—bridging the urban and natural surroundings.
