“Once closed off to much of the general public, the Nokia factory will be transformed into a site where all people can see, feel and experience first-hand the principles of the circular economy.”
— Lidia Egorova, project lead Space&Matter

A new innovation district

Cireco Finland Oy is a relatively young company that creates regional development and infrastructure projects according to the principles of the circular economy. They recently purchased the iconic industrial island of Tehdassaari (Factory Island), which saw the birth of the Nokia company almost 150 years ago. Cireco asked us to help them envision and plan the transformation of this site, which is set to become Finland’s leading innovation district for the circular economy.

Inspired by Cireco’s mission and the site’s unique features, we developed an integral vision for Tehdassaari’s metamorphosis. Previously inaccessible and largely abandoned, the new innovation district is designed to accommodate a great diversity of people, activities and structures.  Even though its development will occur gradually, visitors will be encouraged to visit and explore the island from the very beginning, there learning about the principles of and latest innovation in the circular economy.

“By leading a collaborative process of co-creation workshops, Space&Matter supports Cireco in transforming the Nokia factory. It is the first step in a longer-term collaboration towards advancing the circular economy in Finland and internationally.”
