The Hanging Gardens of Zandweerd
Raising nature-inclusive living to new heights
The winning design forms the culmination of a new 150-home self-build neighbourhood in the north of Deventer, where respect for nature and the landscape is central. The Hanging Gardens of Zandweerd is a residential building of 35 apartments with stacked gardens offering uninterrupted views over the river IJssel. A shared roof terrace serves as a meeting place for the residential community.

The nature-inclusive design with minimalist detailing provides a tranquil backdrop for a diverse mix of native plants. The houses have private front gardens at height supported by cantilevered horizontal planes. Circularity is an integral part of the design. Materials are as much as possible renewable, reusable or bio-based.
The project came together thanks to a collaboration between Onis Vastgoed BV, Space&Matter and Arcon timber structures. The agreement for the apartment complex was festively ratified by the Deventer municipality and Onis Vastgoed BV. The parties are looking forward to bringing this extraordinary building to fruition.
